The Sailing Museum is on track to open May 6 after a thorough renovation. The museum will be home to the National Sailing Hall of Fame and includes an exhibit celebrating the inductees of the America’s Cup Hall of Fame presented by the Herreshoff Marine Museum.
The organization acquired the Armory on Thames Street in March 2019 and is in the final stage of completing a restoration of the building.
The museum will focus on six themes throughout the 8,500-square-foot main exhibit space, including wind and water, the making of a champion and the mental aspects of sailing. There will also be a gallery honoring inductees, explanations on the physical aspects of sailing, the importance of teamwork, and the attributes of competition.
The next National Sailing Hall of Fame induction is scheduled for Nov. 4. Inductees are selected based on performance on the water, contributions to the sport and technical innovations. To date, 110 sailors have been inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame and 94 sailors have been inducted into the America’s Cup Hall of Fame.
