The Decline of Area Fishermen

A historical perspective on the decline of the New England fisherman will be presented by Jim Gibson, a Seamen’s Church Institute board member on Saturday, March 19, at 1 p.m. in the Mariner’s Lounge at Seamen’s. Gibson has written a book on the topic and will offer an in-depth lecture. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Taxpayers’ Association

The next meeting of the Taxpayers’ Association of Jamestown will be Tuesday, March 22, at 6:30 p.m. at the Jamestown Library. The purpose of the group is to monitor, analyze, suggest, and take positions on any matters pertaining to taxes, public spending, and public policy affecting taxes and spending. While the focus of the association is on Jamestown issues, the scope can extend to state and national items.

Aiming to Learn

Youngsters participating in the newly formed Police Explorers received firearms safety and marksmanship training recently at the Newport Rifle Club. Started last winter by Officer Gregory Belcher of the Newport Police, the program is open to boys and girls 14 to 20 from all over the state who are interested in law enforcement.

After completing the training, each of the six participants received a certificate from the National Rifle Association. The Police Explorers are a nonscouting subsidiary of the Boy Scouts of America. The Newport Rifle Club provided the firearm, ammunition, targets and one-on-one coaching by National Rifle Association certified instructors free of charge. The club has offered free firearms safety and marksmanship training for area youth through various programs for nearly 35 years.

Boys and girls eight to 16 who are interested in learning to shoot are welcome to stop by the Newport Rifle Club the second and third Friday of every month beginning at 7 p.m., 360 Wyatt Road, Middletown, for free training.

AARP Meeting

The Newport Chapter of AARP will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, March 21, at 1:30 p.m. at Fenner Hall on Fenner Ave., Newport. New members are asked to arrive a few minutes early and bring their national AARP membership.

This month’s speaker will be Carolyn Martens, a storyteller, humorist, arts educator, and inspirational speaker. She has brought stories alive for listeners of all ages for more than 25 years with her warmth, humor, and artistry.

Members are reminded to bring canned goods that will be donated to local food pantries.

Doggy Biscuit Hunt

Join the Potter League at its annual Doggy Biscuit Hunt on Saturday, March 19, at noon at its shelter, 87 Oliphant Lane, Middletown. Using their remarkable sense of smell, leashed dogs will hunt for eggs filled with biscuits and other surprises for dogs and people. Hunt to be held outside, rain or shine. Dog and people-friendly dogs only. $10 per dog. Pre-registration not required.

Lyme Support Group

The monthly Lyme Support Group will join the Bristol County Group for a combined meeting on Thursday, March 17, at 6 p.m. at the Goff Memorial Hall, 124 Bay State Road, Rehoboth, Mass. The guest speaker will discuss the annual conference on May 21. For more information, contact Jane at lymenewport@gmail.com.

Women in Business After Hours

The Newport County Chamber of Commerce will host its Women in Business After Hours on Thursday, March 24, at the Elms, 367 Bellevue Ave. This event, sponsored by the Preservation Society of Newport County, provides opportunities for women representing all types of industries and professions to meet, mingle, and learn from one another.

More than 100 women are expected to attend. Hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be provided by Blackstone Catering. The program was established by the Newport County Chamber to engage and empower women in business and to support women-owned businesses in Newport County and Rhode Island.

Tickets are $15 for Chamber members and $25 for non-members, available at newportchamber.com.

Middletown GOP

The next Middletown GOP meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 23, at the Courtyard , Marriott, 9 Commerce Drive, Middletown, at 6:30 pm. Discussion items will include attracting and welcoming candidates for local offices, and to replace those in the State Legislature who voted for the Toll Bill.
