Newport This Week

For What It’s Worth

A lady recently brought in a French Caned arm chair, commonly called a Chaise Percee. We used to see this form in Newport frequently many years ago. This personal commode has a lid that lifts revealing a toilet seat with open space underneath to hold a chamber pot; the back is open allowing easy removal of the chamber pot. It was usually kept in the bedroom discretely behind a screen. It dates from the late 19th century. It’s not a keenly called for item today, but I suspect that it would end up as a conversation piece in someone’s parlor in the $400 to $600 price range. — Federico Santi, partner, Drawing Room Antiques
