The Newport City Council discussed whether to allow food trucks to continue operating on Bellevue Avenue at a workshop on March 31.
One of the biggest debates revolved around safety concerns on Bellevue. One location, used by A Mano Pizza & Gelato, is in front of the Stop & Shop plaza. Councilor Jamie Bova asked how many accidents have occurred at that location. Newport Police Sgt. Jonathan Cortes said none of the accidents that occurred were due to a food truck.
“One was attributed to a cellphone, one was attributed to an operator coming out of East Bowery recklessly, and the other was a side swipe of a lamp post,” he said.
Councilor Kathryn Leonard said she has received many complaints from people saying that there isn’t a clear view pulling out of the parking lot.
Cortes said that when determining the cause of accidents, police consider the accident report, witness statements and narratives from the responding officers. “None of these cases mention a food truck,” he said.
Resident Peggy Mullholland, who has previously expressed concerns publicly, spoke during the workshop. “Just like you wouldn’t have a McDonald’s on Bellevue Avenue, the food truck doesn’t belong there,” she said. (Read More)
