The Fourth of July festivities in Washington Square are a hometown celebration that rivals anything else in the state. The square is traffic free, except for a bike parade and marchers returning from William Ellery’s grave in the Common Burying Ground with the Newport Artillery Company. The reading of the Declaration of Independence from the Colony House steps adds a poignant remembrance to this significant day in America’s past.
