Slave History Medallion Program

The public is invited to historic Trinity Church for an acknowledgement program on the church’s role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade and to celebrate the installation of the RI Slave History Medallion on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 4 p.m.

Speakers will be RI Episcopal Bishop Reverend Nicholas Knisely, Reverend Canon and historian Timothy Watt of Trinity Church, and RISHM founder/executive director Charles Roberts, with a choir performance by the RPM Voices of RI. There is no cost to attend.

The nonprofit RI Slave History Medallions is marking the landscape to honor the enslaved in partnership with Rhode Island communities. The Trinity Church installation is the 12th medallion mounted statewide.

RISHM’s work is made possible in part by public donations and by grants from the State Legislature, RI Foundation, RI Council for the Humanities, EJMP Fund for Philanthropy, Prince Charitable Trusts, van Beuren Charitable Foundation, and Bank Newport. Visit rishm.org for more information.

Free Dental Visits for Veterans

On Veteran’s Day, free dental care will be offered to any U.S. military veteran by Newport Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, in conjunction with Portsmouth Dental Associates, at the 136 Broadway, Newport location. The practice will offer cleanings, x-rays, exams, fillings, and extractions.

Practice owner and CEO, Nathan Tilman, DDS says, “All of our dentists are veterans and many of our team members are in military families. We are proud to be able to give back to those who have served.”

Patients will be seen by appointment only and can reserve their time by calling 401-846-3801, x 108.

Free Shred Day

People’s Credit Union is hosting a free community shred day on Saturday, Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Credit Union’s Middletown branch, 858 West Main Road. Everyone is welcome to bring up to two boxes, maximum size 24 x 15 x 10 inches, or 55 pounds of sensitive documents to be securely destroyed by Shred-it’s cross-cutting technology. The Shred-it vehicle will be on location to accept the contents of boxes for destruction with the empty boxes returned to the documents’ owner.
