To the Editor:
I would like to thank everyone who participated in the first ever car free Elliot’s Ride for Everyone, as well as the Bike Newport staff and volunteers whose hard work made this event a success. This ride honors the life of Elliot Kaminitz, a well loved dentist and passionate bicyclist who lost his life while riding in Newport in 2012. It was so wonderful to see families on bicycles, parents with young children in strollers, people in wheelchairs and adaptive bikes, rollerbladers, pedestrians- all people who ordinarily would not have this opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Ocean Drive, one of Newport’s greatest treasures. Thank you to the City of Newport for allowing bicyclists and pedestrians safe access to a two mile section of Ocean Drive on Sunday morning and to the Newport Police Department and Newport Public Schools for their help in making this event safe and accessible. About 400 happy participants showed that biking indeed is for everyone.
