Newport This Week

And Further Down the Road

Although the Broadway Streetscape Project is in full swing and won’t be completed until the fall of 2016, officials are already looking down the road to improve other busy areas of the historic city. Next on tap are Lower Thames and Spring streets, with planners examining options to make those roadways more attractive and inviting to motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists, while easing the dangerous gridlock commonplace in both. Dealing with challenges inherent in narrow colonial era streets, limited rights of way, and concerns about ADA compliance are all significant project factors. The city will move forward, seeking public input at a meeting Tuesday, June 23, at the Edward King House, 5:30-7 p.m. Design and green technology alternatives for the Lower Thames and Spring Streets Streetscape Improvements project will be discussed.
