A Snowy Seen

The Snowy Owls have returned to Sachuest Wildlife Refuge, with this one spotted on Jan. 7. They are impressive raptors. They grow to about two feet tall, have a four- to five-foot wingspan and can weigh more than six pounds. It is one of the largest species of owl and, in North America, is on average the heaviest. Their average lifespan in the wild is 10 years. The adult male is virtually pure white, but females and young birds have some dark spots, while the young are heavily barred. These diurnal [daytime] hunters may be found on the ground in the fields and meadows of the refuge resting or watching for prey. In the past, wildlife enthusiasts from across Rhode Island and neighboring states have flocked to the refuge to admire the Snowy Owl, but are reminded to do so from afar.
