Art in the Park

The Hope Recovery Community Center of Newport County of Parent Support Network of Rhode Island invites the community to the Art in the Park event to help raise awareness of the fourth International Overdose Awareness Day, on Friday, Aug. 31. The Newport event, from noon to 4 p.m. will be in Washington Square and is one of several taking place across the state of Rhode Island in response to the overdose public health crisis.

This expressive arts event will feature the creation of a large group mural painting, therapeutic rock painting, commemorative bracelet making, symbolic T-shirt making, and drumming. For the kids there is puppet making and Origami demonstrations.

There will be a focus on the education and distribution of fentanyl test strips: these are free strips that can test for the presence of fentanyl in a substance. Fentanyl is a potent opioid that is a driver of overdose deaths in Rhode Island and is common in the drug supply, including heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine.
