Jazzed for the Weekend

The Newport Jazz Festival, an iconic event launched in 1954, will bring multitudes of music lovers to the City by the Sea August 3-5. Four stages in Fort Adams State Park will host some of the biggest names in jazz and R&B, including Pat Metheny, Andra Day, Laurie Anderson & Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove, Jazzmeia Horn, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Jon Batiste, and many more. Batiste, the New Orleans-bred, New York-based musician, educator and humanitarian, also performed at the recent Newport Folk Festival where he hosted the “A Change is Gonna Come” set with the Dap-Kings that honored the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement. The lively, surprise-filled Folk Festival, which took place July 27-29 at Fort Adams, drew record numbers of attendees. The Roots (shown above) jazzed it up at last year's Jazz Festival.
