Welcome to The Welcome Center

After more than a decade in the planning, and just barely one year since the groundbreaking in May 2017, last-minute finishing touches were made on Wednesday in preparation for the Preservation Society of Newport ‘s ribbon cutting of its new welcome center on Thursday, June 14. The 3,600-square-foot, one-story building will house the new advanced technology ticket center, restrooms, and refreshment area. The aged-green patina of the copper roof, and garden– style architecture allow the facility to blend into the surrounding trees and landscape behind the caretaker’s cottage near the Breakers’ front entrance. The center was built to be environmentally friendly and takes advantage of the natural light. The ribbon cutting will conclude the society’s annual meeting where the new welcome center will be the backdrop for Governor Raimondo and more than 600 dignitaries and supporters due to attend and tour the facility. The center was designed by Alan Joslin and landscaped by Reed Hilderbrand. (Photo by Lynne Tungett)
