Welcome, Welcome, Welcome

Last fall, seven teams comprised of the best sailors in the sport departed Alicante, Spain, on a journey that would touch six continents and take them to 12 host cities and through four oceans. Often described as the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world, the Volvo Ocean Race will ultimately race 45,000 nautical miles around the globe, and as we speak, the highly competitive teams are heading for Newport, the only North American stopover.

On May 8, the festivities officially begin here in the City by the Sea. As a vibrant, world-class destination and extraordinary community, I encourage you to join us in greeting these sailors, sponsors, racing fans and visitors from around the nation and the world. Come out to Fort Adams and show the world our centuries-old and legendary hospitality, try sailing for yourself, enjoy the Race Village featuring live music and entertainment, experience the 3D cinema inside a giant dome, and be inspired at the One Ocean Exploration Zone where you’ll find interactive exhibits on marine life, ocean conservation, wind, water, weather experiences and marine technology. Explore the sponsor pavilions, the food and drink gardens and enjoy shopping, children’s activities, and of course, the thrill of in-port racing.

In short, you’ll find something for everyone at this free, fun, family friendly, global event unfolding right here in Newport. Park on site, ride your bike or take our favorite mode of transportation: boat (via the Newport Harbor Shuttle and the Newport Jamestown Ferry). For these and more details, visit volvooceanracenewport.com.

On May 20, line the shores of Fort Adams to watch the leg start and bid adieu to the teams as they race to Cardiff, Wales. From there, they will race to Gothenburg, Sweden, then, after nine months of sailing, on to the finish line in The Hague, Netherlands.

On behalf of Sail Newport, Discover Newport, hundreds of volunteers, the entire hospitality community and dozens of other local organizations who have worked to make this event a success, we invite you to join us in welcoming the world to Newport for this truly remarkable event.
