Blasting North to Newport

The Vestas 11th Hour Racing team, on May 1, ducking away from the bow spray as they charge north towards Newport. Traveling at 20+ knots they battle their way through the Sargasso Sea. The crew with locals Charlie Enright and Nick Dana on board are hoping the blue boat will be the first to cross the finish line off Fort Adams in less than a week's time. Other photos and videos of the Leg 8 approach to Newport can be viewed on facebook.com/pg/volvooceanrace/videos. In 2015, about 7,000 greeters met the boats as they arrived on the docks in Newport, so perhaps this year will top that number. Opening ceremonies at Fort Adams are set for Tuesday, May 8 at 4 p.m. To follow the VOR as it heads into Newport, and for more information on all the events, visit wolvooceanracenewport.com.
