Vestas Is Back

Vestas 11th Hour Racing takes a wave head-on as the boat approaches South America’s Cape Horn during Leg 7 of the Volvo Ocean Race on March 20. Leg 7 led the seven boats from Auckland, New Zealand to Itajaí, Brazil through some of the fiercest waters on earth: the Southern Ocean. Ten days after this photo was taken, the Vestas boat dismasted in 30-knot winds. After cutting away the mast, Vestas motored to the Falkland Islands for repair. The Vestas crew departed the islands and finally rejoined the race in Brazil on April 16. Leg 8 of the race is slated to begin on April 22, and boats will make their way to the only North American stop for the 2017-18 VOR: Newport, Rhode Island. The Newport Race Village will be open from May 8-20. Watch for expanded NTW coverage starting next week. (Photo credit: Ainhoa Sanchez / Volvo Ocean Race)
