Audrey J. Casey

Audrey J. Casey (Barton) of Newport, died peacefully at Newport Hospital Sunday, February, 11, 2018 after a short illness. She was surrounded by her loving family. Audrey was born in Hong Kong November 19, 1925 to Alexander L. Barton and Esther M. Xavier Barton, the sixth of 13 children. She was predeceased in June 2017 by her beloved husband of 66 years, James Peter,. She is survived by her 10 children, 22 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

Audrey spent most of her childhood in Kowloon, until the war broke out. Subsequently, she and her family were held in Stanley Camp (as prisoners of war) for three and a half years in Hong Kong. This experience had an abiding influence on her life.

After the war Audrey came to the United States to begin a new life working in a Christian women’s group and arrived in Newport to work for Adé Bethune. It was here that she met her future husband. Shortly after, they were married in England and returned to Newport and began raising their family. Audrey spent the rest of her life dedicating herself to her children, grandchildren, and many others’ children. She was actively involved in helping others through the church, various charities, and family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Timothy, Stephen (Sally), Martin (Martha), Barbara (Timothy) O’Donnell, Susan (David) Jorgensen, Bernadette (John) Griffin, Cecilia (Leslie) Humphrey, Monica (Walter) Chihara, Philip (Lora), Anne (Brian) Magnan, and all their children, grandchildren, and extended families.

Calling hours will be Thursday, February 15, 2018 from 4-7 p.m., at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 16, 2018 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Newport. Burial to follow at St. Columba Cemetery, Brown’s Lane in Middletown.
