Naming Rights for New NFD Boat

To the Editor:

The City of Newport will soon receive its latest addition to the Department of Public Safety, its new fire and rescue boat. The arrival of this boat has been long overdue considering the influx of traffic on the water and the development of buildings that abut the harbor.

This boat is, I believe, still unnamed. I have talked to many members of our City Council, active and retired firefighters and suggested it be named after a man who has devoted his life to public service here in Newport. He has been Chief of the Fire Department, acting City Manager, Director of Public Safety (Blizzard of '78) and has sat on many boards at City Hall. His direct family has produced a Mayor, a police lieutenant, a fire Lieutenant and another fire chief plus many other public servants. That man is retired Chief William H. Connerton III.

I also do not think he would like his name across the stern of this boat so I am suggesting the boat be called "BIG BILL" in his honor. This is well-deserved and long overdue for a man who has done so much and asked for nothing in return.

I am calling on our City Council to pass a proclamation stating the name of the new boat will be "BIG BILL" and asking the public to call your representative endorsing this action.
