Warming Center Volunteers Needed

The Newport Fire Chief has asked Seamen's Church Institute to open as a warming center for as many nights as possible. Volunteers are needed immediately to help care for the homeless during what is predicted to be dangerously cold temperatures for the next week or more. Seamen's will open its building from 4 p.m. to 7 a.m. and will provide food and beverages, cots and blankets. Five volunteers are needed for each shift, from 4 to 11 p.m. and then 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Jan. 2. If you haven't attended warming center training, you are still welcome to volunteer and will receive on the job training. Job duties include handing out warm food and drinks, being a good listener, playing a few games of cards with clients, and help keep the building running smoothly.
