Gilded Age Glamour

The Preservation Society of Newport County invites everyone to celebrate Christmas at the Newport Mansions. The Breakers, The Elms and Marble House are open daily and decorated for the holidays through Jan. 1. The gingerbread mansions expertly created by regional pastry chefs are on display in the kitchen of each house. This seasonal addition has become a great way for children (and adults) to appreciate the architecture and design of the society houses, in miniature. At Marble House, look for the beautiful decorated mantelpieces designed by local garden clubs. On The Breakers loggia, models of the Vanderbilts’ New York Central railroad run through a wooded landscape. And The Elms features a collection of antique toys donated by a family descendant, and a framed photo stop in the ballroom. Visit newportmansions.org for details about Holiday Evenings at the mansions and other special events. Remember, City of Newport residents enjoy free admission to daytime tours.
