The seven international teams competing in the Volvo Ocean Race now have less than 3,000 nautical miles remaining in the second leg, which is a 7,000-mile journey from the Portugal capital of Lisbon to Cape Town, South Africa. Vestas 11th Hour Racing, which passionate observers refer to as “the local boat,” has fallen into fifth place after finishing the first leg in the third spot. Vestas includes several Newport residents, including Nick Dana, who grew up in the shipyard section of the city that was restored by his family over three decades into a multi-dimensional facility. It is where the yachting world will eventually arrive next May 8 in Newport as the ninth of 12 stops in a race that concludes in late June in the Netherlands. The yachts will depart Newport on May 20 for Cardiff, Wales before heading to Sweden. See story on page 9. (Photo by Martin Keruzore/Volvo Ocean Race)
