Positive Net Gain

Middletown High School’s girls’ varsity tennis team captured the Rhode Island Division III championship on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Slater Park in Pawtucket. After posting a stellar, 16-1 regular, D-III season record, the top-seeded Islanders team (pictured above with their medals and head coach, Marianne Packer, at the far right) raced through the D-III tourney and defeated the No. 2 seed, North Providence, four matches to three. With the score tied at three matches apiece, and the final outcome hinging on who would win the No. 1 doubles match, comprised of juniors Anna Ming Holden and Hannah Nasser (pictured returning serve in the decisive match, at right), the Islander girls triumphed by scores of 6-2, 3-6 and 7-6 (1) for the title.
