City of Arboreta Celebration

Last month, Newport’s City of Arboreta welcomed a dozen new properties. The Newport Tree Society and friends honored the new arboreta with a celebratory afternoon tour and evening reception hosted by Michael Walsh and Susan Ruff at their Hillside estate. The afternoon tour gave guests a rare opportunity to visit six private landscapes during a perfect sun-filled day.

Later that evening, guests enjoyed appetizers and cocktails while exploring the exquisite outbuildings at Hillside. Mayor Harry Winthrop, Lily Dick, and Helen Papp gave remarks and made presentations to the new arboreta honorees: Bellevue House, Hillside, Ironwood, Miramar, Oakwood, Ocean View, Peace Pocket, Seascape, Somershome, The Chalet, and The Whim.

The Newport Tree Society was established in 1987 to protect, maintain and regenerate Newport’s legendary urban forest.

Proceeds from both events benefited the Newport Arboretum Heritage Tree Nursery at Rogers High School.
