Onboard for Maria?

Aquidneck Island may have escaped the full wrath of tropical storm Jose this past week, which brought mostly ocean chop and high surf instead of the predicted torrential rains and wind. Those cresting waves, however, were enjoyed enthusiastically by die-hard area surfers. In the photo above, Mark Nuytkens, of Middletown, caught this decent ride at the surfers’ end of Second Beach on Tuesday, Sept. 26. Will Jose linger in our Atlantic neighborhood? Will the hurricane Maria, currently cutting a destructive path through the Caribbean, make its predicted northbound turn up the East Coast, toward New England this coming week? Only the surfing community hopes so. We remind everyone to stay safe; surfers and landlubbers alike. Be extra cautious when viewing waves from an angry ocean, atop slippery rocks. Getting a closer view is not worth the risk to your personal safety. (Photo by Meri Keller)
