Brief Agenda for Council

By Lynne Tungett

The Newport City Council addressed a light agenda in less than 30 minutes at its meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 13.

The only speaker during the Public Hearing portion was Evan Smith, who presented the council with a proposal for the Newport Tourism Marketing Management District. All 10 special events items on the consent calendar were approved.

Councilor Kathryn Leonard commented on two items before final approval was given. She suggested that a policy be drafted for fireworks displays. That request was made because of the Amica Mutual Insurance event on Sept. 27, which wanted approval for a seven-minute fireworks display.

She also spoke of the Gray Matter Marketing's Newport 10 Miler to be held at Fort Adams on June 3. The frequency of fundraising road races, bike rides, and 5Ks has long been a concern of Leonard's. She questioned whether the event could be held in "a less busy time, maybe in May." Matt Gray, of Gray Matter, said that the event was first held in April, but was moved to encourage more attendance. Leonard voted in favor of approving the event.

Among the action items for contract awards were the replacement of turf at Cardines Field and matching grant funds for Edward King House repairs.

Licenses approved included two new Class A (indoors) licenses for Mudville Cafe, 8 West Marlborough St., and for Kale Stems, LLC, d/b/a Stoneacre, 28-30 Washington Square.
