Pell Bridge Construction Resumes

Beginning Sept. 19, The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) will resume the roadway deck rehabilitation project on the Newport Pell Bridge, according to an RITBA press release. The multiphase project began in May with the first phase focusing on a portion of the bridge’s east approach on the Newport side, while workers completed replacements of the west- and eastbound concrete roadway in June.

The current above-deck work will continue through the end of November, and will require single-travel lanes in each direction. Vehicles with a width exceeding 8 feet 6 inches will be prohibited from crossing the bridge, and vehicles with Gross Vehicle Weight over 80,000 pounds will also be prohibited from crossing. Rhode Island State Police presence will be increased during this project, strictly enforcing the bans and monitoring speed restrictions for all vehicles.
