We Are the World

The vibrant performers of the Matsiko World Orphan Choir dazzled patrons on the lawn of St. John the Evangelist Church on Tuesday, Aug. 22, with their captivating dress, enthusiasm, dancing and singing skills. The orphans use their songs to change their own lives, their nation of origin and the lives of the people they meet. The choir contains children from Nepal, Peru, India and Liberia. They are sponsored by donation scholarships and are the only orphans allowed to tour the U.S. as ambassadors, representing the estimated 600 million orphans and at-risk children in the world. The free concert is part of the "Music on the Lawn" summer series. The final show, set for Thursday, Aug. 31 at 6 p.m. on the grounds at 61 Poplar St., will feature Doug Woolverton and friends. Seating and tables will be available for those who arrive early. Otherwise, bring blankets and lawn chairs. (Photo by James Merolla)
