The Square Lights Up

The long-awaited, new lights for Washington Square’s 11 historic-style lamp posts were installed on Monday by Francisco Hernandez and Jeff Belli of Toner Electric. The majority of the funding for the replacement lighting was through a state grant. The square’s revitalization has been underway for more than a decade. At the lighting ceremony held on Wednesday evening, Mayor Harry Winthrop noted the significance of the square as part of the city’s heart and said that in the interest of safety, the upgrades were vital. Lilly Dick, chair of the Washington Square Advisory Committee, concurred with the mayor and enthusiastically said to the group in attendance, “We’re going to make Washington Square a showplace. Next is to bring the fountain back to life.” For more on the square’s lighting and additional pictures, see page 7. (Photo by Lynne Tungett)
