Hanging in the Sun

The sun was shining at Middletown’s Second Beach, but on the day after the Fourth of July, even with the warm temperatures there was plenty of space to stake out a spot in the soft sand. Lifeguards were given a breather with the smaller holiday crowd and mild surf. In the distance, the prominent profile of Hanging Rock can be seen. To learn more about this familiar outcrop that is a defining feature of the 325 acres of the Norman Bird Sanctuary turn to the Great Outdoors column on page 16 by Charles Avenengo.
