Black Ships Coming July 13-16

Now in its 34rd year, the Black Ships Festival is scheduled for Thursday through Sunday, July 13-16. It was begun to commemorate the historic success, in 1854, of Commodore Matthew C. Perry, U.S. Navy, a Newporter, in negotiating the Treaty of Kanagawa. The Black Ships, or Kurofune, refers to the Japanese term for the foreign vessels which, with one exception, had been excluded from Japan for 200 years. The festival is a celebration of the cultural exchange between the two countries.
