(Photo by Lynne Tungett) As part of an ongoing effort to clean up Newport’s sidewalks, officials recently purchased The Billy Goat Vacuum from All Outdoors in Wakefield at a cost of $2,400. The tool was picked up on Friday, June 16. “We are still working on developing a plan of attack but we did do all the sidewalks in the streetscape area of Broadway on Monday to give it a go,” said William Riccio, the city’s director of public services. The Newport City Council recently passed a new ordinance that holds businesses accountable for litter left on sidewalks outside their properties. “The vacuum will help us to keep these sidewalks and other areas in the city clean, although we still need the business community to continue to do their part in front of the stores,” said Riccio.
