Run For Your Life

Nearly 3,000 runners from 32 states and 11 countries gathered at Fort Adams on the morning of Sunday, June 4 for the start of the fifth annual Newport 10 Miler, a breezy dash around Ocean Drive. The race, produced by Gray Matter Marketing, unfolded under a cloudless blue sky, and included in the roster its first long-distance participant. Jerald Froehner, an M.D. in the U.S. Navy, had registered from Germany, where he was stationed. Froehner’s deployment was extended, and unable to return to Newport, he was invited by Gray Matter to run remotely (wearing bib# 3136) and send in his time. He finished in 1:28:49 at a pace of 8:53. Runners thirsting for more can sign up for the fifth annual Norman Bird Sanctuary 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, June 17. The event is in honor of David Leys, Jr. For information go to normanbirdsanctuary.org. (Photo contributed by Gray Matter Marketing)
