Stars in Education

The Newport Public Education Foundation (NPEF) has announced the recipients of the annual Noreen Stonor Drexel Education Awards for 2017. Each year awards are presented in three categories: Friend of Education, Partner in Education and Unsung Hero. The goal of NPEF is to bridge the needs of students in public schools with the community.

Hank Kniskern will receive the Friend of Education Award. He recently led the facilitation of the Newport Public School's One Newport Strategic Plan for 2017-2021. Over the past 18 months, he has taken on the issues and problems facing Newport Public Schools, and has become a strong advocate for the implementation of the strategic plan.

The Unsung Hero Award will be presented to Christianne Fisher, who has been an integral part of Rogers High School, not only as assistant principal for Teaching & Learning, but as director of the Accelerated Alternative Learning Program and as the NpS Meals benefit coordinator.

The Island Moving Company will receive the Partner in Education Award. IMC, celebrating its 35th year, has enriched the lives of Newport Public School students by having them attend numerous performances for free, and conducted multiple “creative movement” residences for the past 18 years.

Awards will be presented at the Foundation’s annual benefit event, An Evening for Education, to be held Friday, June 2, from 6 – 8:30 p.m. at the Edward King House. Tickets can be purchased online at npef-ri. org. For more information, call 401-847-2100 x 219.
