Rita Slom Chosen as ‘Novel Evening’ Honorary Chair

Rita Slom Rita Slom By a unanimous vote of the Newport Public Library’s volunteer event committee, Rita Eisenberg Slom was chosen as the Honorary Chair of its annual fundraising event “A Novel Evening at the Beach.”

Born in Newport’s Fifth Ward, she attended Newport schools. After working 19 years for the Rhode Island Legislature and the RI Speaker of the House, Slom was elected to become the clerk of Newport Canvassing Authority, a position she held until her retirement.

As a consummate volunteer, she participates in many local and national organizations. She was the first women elected to the Board of Directors of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce and became the first woman installed as President of Congregation Jeshuat Israel. She remains an officer of the synagogue and Touro Synagogue Foundation. Currently, she is a on the Newport Hospital Board of Governors and a proud member of the board of trustees of the Newport Public Library.

The event will be held on Sunday, June 25 at the Easton Beach rotunda. Casual attire and flip flops are encouraged as guests ride the merry-go-round and salute Rita. The cost to attend is $75 per person. For more information and reservations, call 401-847-8720 x 102.
