For What It’s Worth

A friend brought in a crystal and silver decanter that had been living in a safety deposit box for the last 32 years. The owner claimed a provenance to a Colonial, family patriot of note. The hall mark indicated otherwise, dating the decanter to 1847. Family histories of objects often get obscured by reality, and without strong documentation add little or no dollar value. The substantial crack in the crystal would also indicate a nominal value for this family “treasure.”
