Now Voyagers

The 200-foot Tall Ship Oliver Hazard Perry, Rhode Island’s Official Sailing Education Vessel, passed the Inn at Castle Hill last Friday on her way home from completing her first international ocean voyages, which took her twice to Cuba and once to Bermuda. (Both trips started from Ft. Lauderdale, where the ship was based during the month of March.) On board were high school students, as well as some from Tall Ships Portland, and adults who participated in Ocean Navigator celestial navigation classes on the leg back home from Bermuda to Newport. Perry will depart May 1 and May 6 for five-day programs in partnership with the Naval Academy Prep School for midshipmen candidates and again on May 25 for a one-week program for Rogers High School students. Her subsequent voyage will be the groundbreaking ocean science research expedition to the Arctic and into the Northwest Passage, in partnership with the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, and funded in part by the National Science Foundation.
