Music to St. Mary’s Ears

After nearly 60 years of service, the massive pipe organ at St. Mary’s Church in Newport, badly in need of repair, was disassembled piece by piece last October and shipped to Canada and the factory of its origin. There it underwent a major restoration project. On the morning of April 19, it arrived back in town. This has been a project of Biblical proportions, requiring the individual labeling of its more than 30,000 pieces and a carefully diagrammed blueprint so that not one piece would get out of place. Deconstruction took two and a half weeks, as will the reconstruction. Once installed, it will look and sound like new. According to St. Mary’s pastor Rev. Kris von Maluski, pictured here with volunteer John Hirschboeck, the pipes have been cleaned and adjustments have been made in the design, bringing the decorative facade more into alignment with the Neo-Gothic style of the church.
