‘From Slaves to Soldiers’

The Middletown Historical Society will host a talk by Robert Geake titled, “From Slaves to Soldiers: The 1st Rhode Island Regiment in the Revolutionary War” as part of its winter lecture series on Sunday, April 9, at 2 p.m. at the Paradise School. The story of the first Continental army unit composed of African American and Native American enlisted men will be presented. During the war the large numbers of recruits dwelling in the area during winter months prompted R.I. general Mitchell Varnum to set up a regiment of slaves as RI held the largest number of slaves in New England. Donations are appreciated. For more information, visit middletownhistory.org.
