Getting Their Kicks

According to local enthusiasts, kickball is making a comeback, and Newport happens to be a breeding ground for the upsurge in the popularity of the old playground staple. The 13-week spring season kicked off on March 20 at Morton Park in the Fifth Ward. According to local organizers Carson and Lindsey Turowski, the city is currently home to a league of 300 players on 12 teams competing for a shot at the season championship. Teams are coed, players must be 21 years of age, and camaraderie is one of the staples of team activity. The Monday evening games end with everyone kicking back at local pubs and restaurants. The fall season kicks off at Toppa Field in September. It seems that players, as if not having enough fun already, have also made a sport of coming up with the most "poetic" team names.
