HDC Approvals

The Newport Historic District Commission gave final approval at its meeting on Tuesday, March 21 for the renovation and restoration of the former Child and Family Property located at 24 School Street.

At its February meeting, the commission approved the demolition of portions of the property. The property owner then requested approval of the design and architectural improvements. The project was approved with the provision that wood roofing shingles are used, which commission member Michael Conroy said was consistent with when the home was originally constructed.

The commission also approved by a 5-2 vote the application to renovate and restore the property located at 46 Church Street. The owners of the home, which was constructed in 1779, are seeking to convert the property into a seven-room guest house. An application on that request will be heard by the Zoning Board of Review at its March 27 meeting.
