Scholarships for High School Seniors

Nursing Scholarship

The $1,000 Elizabeth P. Hussey Nursing Scholarship is being offered to any Middletown resident attending an accredited nursing school. For more information, contact Prudence Silvia at pruzer@cox.net.

Rhode Island Foundation Scholarships

The Rhode Island Foundation is offering students and their families more than $1.8 million in scholarships. Dozens of individual, family and organizational donors have established scholarship funds at the Foundation to help students defray educational expenses such as tuition, room and board, fees and books. In addition to general scholarship assistance that is available statewide, a number of funds target Rogers High School graduates, while the Miss Swinburne Fund is open to any Newport County student. A complete list of scholarships, application deadlines and eligibility requirements is posted on the Foundation’s website at www.rifoundation.org.

Criminal Justice Scholarship

The Aquidneck Island National Police Parade Committee will be awarding a $1,000 scholarship to an Aquidneck Island graduating senior who is pursuing continuing education in the field of criminal justice. Deadline is April 25. Applications should be submitted to the Police Parade Scholarship Committee, Attn: Gwen George, 120 Broadway, Newport.

Slom Scholarship for Freedom and Diversity

The Slom Scholarship will provide up to two college scholarships for high school seniors who submit an interpretive work on the George Washington Letter to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport relating to the present day. Mosaic Club Book Award

Applications for the Mosaic Club of Newport County’s three $750 book awards are available in the island high school’s guidance offices. Deadline is April 2. For more information, call Mary Sinnott at 401- 846-5275. Deadline is April 21.

Newport Yacht Club Scholarship

The Newport Yacht Club Endowment Fund offers annual scholarship grants to residents of Newport County or students currently attending school here. The student must have been accepted into a certified training or education program in marine studies that leads to a career in the marine industry. The scholarships of up to $1,000 may be used for paying tuition or course fees, or to purchase books or tools for the course. More information and an application, may be found at nptef.org.

Maritime Memorial Scholarship

Seamen’s Church Institute of Newport will be accepting applications for the Leonard W. and Katherine C. Hayward Maritime Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is applicable to Newport County residents who are admitted to an accredited educational program with a focus on preparing for seafaring occupations. The application is at seamensnewport.org. Deadline is May 17.

Sons of Italy Scholarship

Forum Lodge 391 will award the Anna M. Ripa Memorial Scholarships to graduating seniors of Italian descent who plan to attend any college or a post-high school. Applications are available at island high school guidance offices or by calling Shirley Ripa at 401-849-7087. Deadline is April 25.

KVH Technology Scholarship

The application for the 2017 A.H. Kits van Heyningen Technology Scholarship is available on kvh.com and from the guidance offices of area high schools. The $2,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a high school senior who will be attending a four-year undergraduate science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) program in the fall. Deadline is April 7.
