The Race Stops Here

At 45,000 nautical miles and with visits to 12 cities, the 2017- 18 Volvo Ocean Race will be the longest in its history. Newport is the only North American stopover on the route. “We hope to leverage through the VOR with expansion of education about sustainability and the ocean, and Sail Newport is here to provide the introduction and access to the water and sailing for everyone,” said Brad Read, executive director of Sail Newport, during a press conference on Tuesday, March 21. The Vestas 11th Hour Racing team also announced their entry into the race. The team, which returns to the VOR after their boat was damaged in the 2014-15 race, will sail from Lisbon, Portugal to Newport, with an anticipated arrival in early May.
