Public Invited to Discuss Renewable Energy

A forum on Renewable Energy, hosted by the Newport Energy & Environment Commission, will be held on Monday, March 13, at 6 p.m. at the Newport Public Library. It is the second in a series of forums in an effort to create a more sustainable Newport.

Speakers will include Shauna Beland of the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources; Fred Presley, town manager of West Warwick; Stuart Flanagan, co-founder of Newport Renewables; and Julia Forgue, the director of Newport Public Works. Presley, Flanagan and Forgue will each describe their municipal energy projects.

Jamie Bova, Newport City Councilor, will lead a Questionand Answer segment on the characteristics needed for a property to be the next renewable project, while Beland will answer questions regarding the necessary partnerships. State Rep. Lauren Carson D-Newport will summarize the next steps.

Rhode Island is the fourth most expensive state in the U.S. to purchase retail electricity, according to the U.S. Energy Administration data for 2015, trailing only Hawaii, Alaska and Connecticut.
