Bringing it Back to Life

Since last summer Spruce Acres Tree Farm, the 23-acre parcel of land on the East Main Road across from Mitchell’s Lane, has been the object of desire for the board and staff at the Aquidneck Land Trust. The goal has been to raise $2 million by March 31. On Monday, Feb. 27, the campaign to save Spruce Acres received a significant boost from the Portsmouth Town Council when the seven council members approved, unanimously, a $300,000 grant request. The Middletown Town Council had promised to match that amount, bringing the fundraising $600,000 closer to its goal. Since it was established in 1990, ALT has conserved 2552.7 acres of land on Aquidneck Island – 21.3 percent of the island. “It is wonderful to work toward the preservation of this property,” said Executive Director Chuck Allott, “knowing the great value it will bring to Aquidneck Island residents.
