Family Movie Night at Emmanuel Church

EFC ‘2017 Year of Care’ Outreach Program

The Evangelical Friends Church, Middletown, has been revitalizing the Aquidneck Island Christian Academy (AICA) on East Main Road in Portsmouth as the first beneficiary of its 2017 Year of Care outreach program. On Saturday, Feb. 4, volunteers gathered to give the school a deep cleaning, much-needed repairs and a major reorganization. Saturday, Feb. 18, is the next scheduled outreach for the AICA project. Individuals and groups outside of the EFC congregation are encouraged to join the effort. Theology and Humor Discussion Series Continues

On Sunday, Feb. 19, at Trinity Church in Newport, the Rev. Alan Neale, Assisting Priest at Trinity Church, will present “Humor and Grace,” the third discussion in the Theology of Humor series. He will focus on humor's emphasis on the now and its gift of joy during times of trials and tribulations, developing in us a stronger faith and a more robust hope. Community Baptist Choral Event

The voices of Unity Choir present “This is My Song: Our Story Told by Spirituals.” It will be held at Community Baptist Church, 50 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Blvd., Sunday, Feb. 19, at 4 p.m. Free will offering. 401- 847-1707.

Trans 101

Learn about gender, gender identity and expression, the transgender umbrella, etiquette, and how to be an ally on Sunday, Feb. 19, at the parish hall of Channing Church. Some of Channing's own transgender members will be present to share their experiences. The talk is sponsored by Interweave, Channing's group for LGBTQ people and allies. Interweave will have a potluck dinner preceding the program at 5:30 p.m. Bring a dish to share if you would like to come early, or come only for the program at 7 p.m. Desserts and coffee will be served. ‘An Evening of Ordinary Miracles’

Cabaret artist and life coach Patrice McKinley offers an inspiring evening and celebration of well-crafted song and story, “Ordinary Miracles,” recounting her own journey from addiction to recovery on Friday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m., at St. Paul’s Church, 12 Marlborough St. Any donations are gratefully accepted to support St. Paul’s Recovery Missions. Viktor Valkov Recital

The Jamestown Community Piano Association presents pianist Viktor Valkov on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Church, 87 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown. Evensong at St. John’s

On Sunday, Feb. 26, from 4-5 p.m., St. John’s, 61 Poplar St., will offer a brass and choral evensong and benediction for Transfiguration. Evensong, an atmospheric and deeply personal form of worship, appeals to persons of many faiths and has been adopted as an American tradition in many parishes and cathedrals of the Episcopal Church. The Evensong service lasts 45 minutes and is incense-free. It will be followed without pause by a Eucharistic devotion known as Benediction, at which incense is used. The Professional Choristers of the Choir School of Newport County, the St. John's adult choir, and the Soulful Brass Quintet will perform. Solemn Ash Wednesday Service

St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church, 61 Poplar St., will hold a solemn Ash Wednesday service on March 1 at 6:30 p.m. The Imposition of Ashes will be accompanied by Allegri’s “Miserere,” performed by the Professional Choristers of the Choir School of Newport County and the St. John’s adult choir.
