Islanders Win the Pool

The Middletown High School girls swim team capped off a 9-1 Division II season on Tuesday night, Feb. 7, powering past North Providence 75-19 at the Newport County Regional YMCA. MH Senatators took first place in all 11 events. The Islanders’ freshman swimmer, Katherine Cawley (pictured above during her 100 butterfly race that evening), won the 500 freestyle event and participated in her team’s victorious 400 relay. Senior Johanna Lalli took both the 50 and 100 freestyles; sophomore Sofie Andersen topped the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly; and freshman Laura Borges touched first in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley. Middletown will have to wait until Narragansett (8-1 in D-II) swims against Portsmouth on Friday night, Feb. 10, at Roger Williams University to discover whether they will win or share the 2017 D-II title. Islanders' girl swimmers will compete in the D-II swim meet on Saturday, Feb. 18, at the RWU pool with a 2 p.m. start. Qualifiers at that meet there will swim in the state tournament on Saturday, Feb. 25, at Brown University. (Photo by Meri Keller)
