‘A Day On Not Off’

The annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “A Day On Not Off” will present a full day of programs and events on Monday, Jan. 16. All programs are sponsored by the Newport County branch of the NAACP and are free, except for the luncheon.

A torch run will start at 9 a.m. at the 1st Rhode Island Regiment Monument in Portsmouth, intersection of routes 24 and 114. The run will end at Thompson Middle School.

A morning program of speakers and music will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Thompson. Speakers include Lt. Cdr. Sheree Williams and teen speaker Serenity Williams, a student at Gaudet Middle School. A special rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” will be played by Chris Meacham.

A luncheon will be held at the Mainstay Inn. The guest speaker is Ricardo Pitts-Wiley, actor and play-writer. A special performance will be given by Kenneth Johnson. Tickets are $25 and $15 for youth. To purchase tickets, call Thelma at 401-338-1075 or Victoria at 401- 846-3967.

Pauline Moye and Veronica Mays will host an afternoon program at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center.

An evening worship service will be held at 5 p.m. at Community Baptist Church led by Minister Laurie Smalls Johnson.
