Victory Down Under

The 100-foot super-maxi Perpetual LOYAL, with a Newport duo on board, was first to cross the finish line on Tuesday, Dec. 27, to win, in record time, the 72nd Rolex Sydney Hobart Race. Justin Clougher and Nick Dana were members of a seasoned 17-man crew that left Sydney Harbor on Monday, Dec. 26, and covered the 628-nautical-mile course to Hobart, Tasmania, in a record-breaking 37 hours, 31 minutes, and 20 seconds. In capturing line honors against 87 other boats, Perpetual LOYAL took nearly five hours off the 2012 record for the venerated competition. It was the 13th Sydney Hobart Race and the fourth line-honor title for the “Tassie” Clougher (a native Tasmanian), and the second consecutive Sydney Hobart – and win – for Dana, a veteran of local waters. “The gods shined on us for the entire race,” said a jubilant Clougher.
