James H. Marshall

James H. Marshall, 78, of Newport, a retired real estate broker, yachtsman, and environmentalist, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2016 at Newport Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Newport, he was the son of the late Francis J. and Madge (Robertson) Marshall.

He was a graduate of DeLaSalle Academy (’57) and Providence College (’62).

A licensed real estate broker and certified general appraiser, he was past president of the Commercial Investment division of the RI Assoc. of Realtors and past president of the Boston Chapter, American Society of Appraisers, from which he earned an Accredited Senior Appraiser designation.

He retired in 1996 as president of the Wm. R. Warburton Agency, a family business established in 1921, thus ending the company’s 75 years’ service to Rhode Island and nearby Connecticut and Massachusetts communities.

In his retirement, Mr. Marshall became active in various environmental causes, including being a co-founder of the Aquidneck Island Watershed Council, which subsequently merged with Clean Ocean Access. He was also a supporter of the Aquidneck Land Trust.

Mr. Marshall liked to share his time in the communities in which he resided. He was an advocate of early education, volunteering as a reading helper and math tutor at the Pell School in Newport, and a member of the Board of Directors for Baby Steps, an East Bay community program which supports families with young children.

An avid cruising sailor, he supported youth sailing programs throughout Narragansett Bay as a race committee volunteer, and established a regatta, for young women sailors, that honored his late wife. He was the founding president and a director of the Greenwich Bay Sailing Assoc., based at East Greenwich Yacht Club. He was a past chairman of the Narragansett Bay Yachting Association’s Junior Committee. Mr. Marshall was also a former member of Greenwich Bay Power Squadron and East Greenwich and Newport Yacht Clubs.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Rose (Warburton) Marshall and his brother, Francis J. Marshall Jr.

He is survived by daughters Ann E. Sousa and Mary Marshall Purinton and their respective spouses, Augustine P. Sousa III and Zachary W. Purinton, and his granddaughter, Cordelia Rose Purinton, all of Massachusetts.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2016 at 11 a.m. at St. Lucy’s Catholic Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown, R.I. Family will be receiving guests in the church narthex beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Burial will be private at the convenience of the family, as his remains were donated to the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
