Lights and Good Cheer

In the past week, nearly a dozen evergreen trees placed along Broadway have been decorated by students from Thompson Middle School. Here, eighth-graders from Suzanne Bessin's Spanish class and Barbara Walton-Faria's home room are arranging the ornaments they made for the tree in front of Bike Newport’s new home at 62 Broadway. Thanks to some effective municipal-business-neighborhood teamwork (with no elves in sight) the trees, lampposts wrapped with lights, and a 25-foot spruce in front of City Hall have all brought a holiday atmosphere to the revitalized thoroughfare. On Thursday, Dec. 15 at 6 p.m., as a finale to a community stroll, some caroling, and a visit by St. Nick on his fire truck, Mayor Harry Winthrop was scheduled to pick the winners of the Broadway merchants’ raffle on the steps of City Hall. Three dozen businesses contributed to the raffle, culminating in more than $1,500 in gift certificates. (Photo by Jaime Crowley)
