Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice

The construction of New England’s largest working gingerbread lighthouse was recently completed by the Newport Marriott’s kitchen team. The 16-foot, gluten-free culinary creation is located in the lobby of the Newport Visitor Information Center and can be seen daily until Jan. 1 (excluding Christmas Day). The Marriott team devoted 100 hours to baking, building and decorating the lighthouse. The sugar-and-spice creation includes 350 pounds of organic gingerbread to comprise the more than 1,600 bricks, 2,400 pieces of candy and giant lollipops for décor and 20 gallons of royal icing. Throughout the season, visitors are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to fill the sleigh for local food pantries. The Visitor Center is open Sunday – Thursday, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from , 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Santa Claus is scheduled to visit the lighthouse on Sunday, Dec. 11, from noon-3 p.m. Want to know where else you can meet up with the Old St. Nick?
